Self-Represented Family Law Consulting in San Francisco
Case-Specific Attorney Guidance While You Stay in Control
Representing yourself doesn’t mean making every legal decision alone. At Van Voorhis & Sosna LLP, we provide case-specific advice to people who want to remain responsible for their filings, negotiations, and court appearances while consulting an attorney about decisions with legal consequences.
Because our practice is devoted exclusively to family law, we can help you understand your options, assess the current stage of your case, and consider a strategy grounded in your circumstances rather than general information.
Call (415) 539-0422 to discuss the guidance you need for a self-represented family-law matter.
Private Consulting & San Francisco Court Self-Help Serve Different Roles
The San Francisco Superior Court ACCESS Center and California Courts self-help resources provide general legal information and assistance with forms. They can’t serve as your lawyer, offer confidential advice tailored to your strategy, or assess how the law applies to your complete set of facts.
Self-represented consulting lets you retain control of your case while seeking private advice about selected issues. Limited-scope representation means an attorney’s role is restricted to tasks identified in a written agreement. The term unbundled legal services often describes discrete legal assistance provided instead of full representation. Before any work begins, you and the attorney must confirm the scope of the arrangement.
Consulting may be appropriate when you can manage the administrative demands of your case but want legal analysis at an important decision point. The right level of involvement depends on the issues in dispute, upcoming deadlines, the opposing party’s position, and your ability to manage California procedure.
You may consider seeking guidance when:
- Responding to papers filed by the other party
- Evaluating a proposed settlement or agreement
- Organizing financial, property, or parenting information
- Preparing for mediation, negotiation, or a court hearing
- Deciding whether you now need full representation
Divorce, child custody, support, property division, domestic partnerships, and LGBTQ family-law matters each involve distinct legal standards and strategic concerns.

Honest & Upfront RepresentationGuidance for the Decisions That Can Shape Your Case
Our partners work directly with clients to understand their goals, identify disputed issues, and develop an approach suited to the facts and current stage of the case. The discussion focuses on the decisions in front of you and the information you need to make them.
Assessing Your Case & Next Steps
A family-law consultation may address immediate deadlines, available evidence, settlement options, procedural concerns, and the risks of continuing without broader representation. Advice based on your facts and relevant documents provides a more meaningful analysis than general information found through online research.
Understanding Documents & Filings
California forms, declarations, financial disclosures, exhibits, and proposed agreements can affect what the court is asked to decide. Depending on the agreed scope, document-focused guidance may include discussing the significance of papers you received, identifying information that appears to be missing, or explaining the issues raised by a proposed filing. We can clarify what document-related assistance is available before work begins.
Preparing for Negotiation, Mediation, or a Hearing
We encourage amicable settlement when it fits the client’s circumstances, and we frequently serve as advising or consulting attorneys for clients participating in mediation. A consultation may focus on clarifying objectives, organizing supporting information, evaluating proposals, and distinguishing flexible terms from essential ones.
Hearing preparation may include discussing the purpose of the proceeding, the issues properly before the court, the available evidence, and questions you may need to answer. Unless a written representation agreement says otherwise, you remain responsible for filings, service, deadlines, courtroom conduct, and compliance with court rules.
Recognizing When Consulting May Not Be Enough
Consulting isn’t the right structure for every case. Broader representation may warrant consideration when the issues involve urgent safety concerns, substantial financial complexity, extensive discovery, repeated procedural disputes, a trial, or an opposing party represented by counsel.
Your needs may also change as the case develops. Because we handle matters through settlement efforts and strategic litigation when necessary, we can discuss whether new claims, evidence, deadlines, or court proceedings call for a different level of attorney involvement.

Discuss the Right Level of Guidance for Your Case
Schedule a complimentary telephone consultation to explain where your case stands, what you’re handling yourself, and the type of attorney guidance you’re seeking. We can discuss whether private consulting fits your current needs or whether you should consider broader representation.
The State Bar of California has certified our partners in family law. An initial contact doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship, and any consulting or representation arrangement must be confirmed separately.
